Bihar IGP Sunil Kumar Naik Continues Interrogation by Andhra Police in Raju Torture Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 6 (NationPress) Bihar's Inspector General of Police, Sunil Kumar Naik, returned for a second day of questioning by the Andhra Pradesh police on Friday regarding the alleged custodial abuse of former Member of Parliament K. Raghurama Krishna Raju.
The Bihar cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer arrived at the Central Crime Station in Guntur around 10 p.m. and will be questioned until 5 p.m., according to a police spokesperson.
Naik is being interrogated by a police team led by A. R. Damodar, the Superintendent of Police from Vizianagaram, who is in charge of the investigation.
On Thursday, Naik underwent questioning for a total of seven hours.
Following orders from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, he is required to appear for questioning daily until March 9, when the court will hear his petition for anticipatory bail.
Last year, the Guntur Police filed a case against former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and three IPS officers, including Naik, over the alleged torture of Raju in 2021 during the governance of the YSR Congress Party.
At the time, Raju was a rebel MP of YSRCP, arrested for making derogatory remarks against then Chief Minister Reddy.
Naik had previously served in Andhra Pradesh on deputation as the Deputy Inspector General in the Crime Investigation Department (CID).
Currently, he holds the position of Director of Bihar State Fire Services, while Raju serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
Raju won a seat in the Lok Sabha on a YSRCP ticket from Narsapuram in 2019, but later became a rebel.
On May 14, 2021, he was arrested at his residence in Hyderabad and transported to Guntur.
Before the 2024 elections, Raju joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and was subsequently elected to the Assembly, later becoming Deputy Speaker after the TDP-led coalition assumed power.
Following a complaint from Raju alleging an attempted assassination during police custody, a case was launched against Reddy, Naik, and three other IPS officers.
On February 23, the Andhra Pradesh Police arrested Sunil Naik in Patna after he failed to respond to previous summons. However, a Patna court denied the police's request for his transit warrant.
Subsequently, a court in Guntur issued an arrest warrant on February 26.
Naik has also filed for anticipatory bail in the High Court, arguing that the case against him is politically motivated. His defense claims he merely arrested Raju in Hyderabad concerning a case and transferred him to Guntur, firmly denying any involvement in the alleged custodial torture.
While granting interim protection, the High Court mandated that he appear before the investigation officer.
