Ongoing Interrogation of Bihar IPS Officer in Torture Case of Ex-MP
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 9 (NationPress) The Andhra Pradesh Police have extended their interrogation of Sunil Kumar Naik, the Inspector General of Police from Bihar, for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, concerning the alleged custodial torture of former MP K. Raghurama Krishna Raju.
The Bihar cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer arrived at the CID regional office, where police reportedly re-enacted the scene of the alleged incident. Subsequently, he was moved to the Central Crime Station in Guntur for further questioning.
Naik is under investigation by a police team led by A. R. Damodar, the Superintendent of Police in Vizianagaram, who is overseeing the case. Following the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s directive, Naik has been appearing for questioning daily since March 5.
The IPS officer has been interrogated from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., primarily based on Raju’s allegations of being tortured while in custody during the regime of the YSR Congress Party.
In response to Raju’s complaints, the Guntur Police filed charges last year against former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and three IPS officers, with Naik included among them.
Raju, previously a dissenting MP of YSRCP, was detained in 2021 for making derogatory comments about then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.
During his tenure in Andhra Pradesh, Naik was serving as Deputy Inspector General in the Crime Investigation Department (CID).
Currently, he holds the position of Director of the Bihar State Fire Services, while Raju serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
The Andhra Pradesh Police apprehended Naik in Patna on February 23 due to his failure to comply with summons. However, a Patna court denied the police's request for a transit warrant.
Following this, a court in Guntur issued an arrest warrant on February 26.
Naik sought anticipatory bail from the High Court, which granted him interim protection but mandated his appearance before the investigating officer.
