Key Takeaways
Davos, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has emphasized the increasing economic significance of the Northeastern region, declaring that Assam adopts a targeted and inclusive approach to investments, where every investor is regarded as a “VIP investor”, regardless of the size of their proposals.
Addressing the press during the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos on Thursday, Sarma remarked that while Assam may not be one of the largest states or attract a multitude of investment proposals, it compensates through personalized engagement and ongoing policy support.
He pointed out that India’s growth narrative should incorporate its regional strengths, with the Northeast increasingly recognized as a hub of economic vitality.
The Chief Minister mentioned that India consists of various regions with unique potentials, and the Northeast is currently undergoing a transformation fueled by strategic interventions and support from the Central Government.
He stated that longstanding challenges in the region are being resolved, enabling its inherent strengths to emerge.
Using key metrics, Sarma highlighted that cement consumption in the Northeastern region is growing at nearly 20% annually, indicating rapid growth in infrastructure and construction.
He also noted that India’s largest untapped hydrocarbon resources are being explored in Arunachal Pradesh, while Assam is establishing itself as a vital player in the country’s developing semiconductor ecosystem.
Additionally, Sarma remarked that Assam has evolved into a power-surplus state, significantly boosting its attractiveness for industrial investments. Enhanced energy availability has become a crucial facilitator for manufacturing and large-scale economic activities.
The Chief Minister disclosed that extensive geological studies are being conducted in the Northeast, with G2 and G3 level surveys at five to six sites to evaluate rare earth material reserves. He mentioned that the results could lead to strategic industrial development of national significance.
Stressing the need for a perceptual shift, Sarma urged industries to view the Northeast not as a remote region, but as a new frontier of opportunity.
With improving infrastructure, energy security, and abundant natural resources, he asserted that Assam and the broader Northeastern region are well-equipped to play a crucial role in India’s future economic expansion.
