Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 24 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Tuesday that the state is making significant strides in developing world-class sports infrastructure to cultivate young talent and establish a supportive environment for athletes aiming to compete on both national and international stages.
Sarma shared insights via a post on X, highlighting the ongoing construction of cutting-edge sports facilities throughout Assam, aimed at providing promising athletes with the necessary infrastructure and exposure to thrive.
“To ensure that Assam’s athletic talent has access to world-class facilities, we are establishing state-of-the-art sports infrastructure across the region,” the Chief Minister stated.
He revealed plans to inaugurate the Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur on Wednesday, calling it a pivotal move towards motivating the next generation of champions.
This venue is named after Olympic bronze medallist and world boxing champion Lovlina Borgohain, and is expected to become a center for training, grassroots development, and talent scouting in Upper Assam.
Sarma elaborated that the government's sports policy emphasizes decentralization of infrastructure, ensuring that athletes from rural and semi-urban regions can access quality training facilities without needing to relocate to urban centers.
Moreover, he mentioned that modern stadiums, indoor arenas, synthetic tracks, and academies are being set up in various districts to foster a sporting culture at the community level.
The Chief Minister pointed out that investments in sports infrastructure are paired with improved support systems, including coaching, scholarships, financial aid, and opportunities for international exposure for athletes.
According to him, the state has prioritized sports disciplines in which Assamese athletes have demonstrated remarkable potential, such as boxing, football, athletics, and archery.
Sarma noted that venues named after sporting icons not only function as training facilities but also serve as inspirational symbols for aspiring young athletes.
“When children train in arenas named after Assam’s champions, it reinforces their belief that they too can achieve global success,” he remarked.
He concluded by stating that the Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena will be instrumental in identifying and nurturing talent from Lakhimpur and surrounding regions, thereby enhancing Assam’s contribution to India’s sporting successes.
Reaffirming the government's dedication, Sarma declared that sports development is being perceived as an investment in youth empowerment, health, and national pride, adding that Assam is progressively establishing itself as a key sporting hub in the Northeast.
