New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) Voters across Assam enthusiastically participated in the Assembly elections on Thursday, with political figures emphasizing this event as a true celebration of democracy.
The election is mainly a showdown between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is pursuing a third consecutive mandate, and the Congress, which aims to regain power after losing it in 2016.
Union Minister of State Pabitra Margarita cast his vote at polling station No. 21 in the Jorhat Assembly constituency and referred to voting as a democratic festival. “I am here to cast my vote. Indeed, the festival of democracy is the greatest celebration of our democratic values. I urge our people to come forward and vote for democracy, and to strengthen our democratic framework,” he stated.
In Diphu, BJP candidate Surya Rongphar cast his vote at polling station No. 130, expressing optimism about his party's chances. “The enthusiasm we've seen over the last 10 days reflects that people are eager to see the BJP government form again,” Rongphar remarked.
Despite heavy rains affecting Jalukbari and other regions, determined voters braved the elements to make their voices heard.
At polling stations in Kamrup, Block Level Officer Ankur Das discussed extensive preparations: “Twenty-seven personnel have been working since yesterday to ensure everything is ready. Our team has taken care of all decorations. The station includes medical facilities, cradles for infants, breastfeeding areas, wheelchairs for the disabled, and an ambulance on standby,” he noted.
Polling commenced at 7 a.m. and will proceed until 5 p.m., covering all 126 Assembly constituencies. Long lines of voters were spotted from early morning, demonstrating widespread excitement and civic engagement. Many voters expressed hope that the new government would focus on development, infrastructure, and overall growth in Assam.
The current term of the 126-member Assam Assembly is set to conclude on May 20, making these elections crucial in shaping the state’s political landscape for the next five years.
