Guwahati, April 2 (NationPress) The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, expressed strong confidence on Thursday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will succeed in capturing the Nazira Assembly seat during the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, predicting a loss for Congress leader Debabrata Saikia.

While campaigning for BJP's candidate Mayur Borgohain in Nazira, Margherita asserted that the sentiment among voters has shifted towards the ruling party.

He emphasized that constituents are eager to align with the government to foster development and create enhanced opportunities.

“The residents of Nazira are now inclined to support the government. They are anticipating progress and change, and this time they will opt for a different path,” Margherita stated, noting the substantial backing the BJP is receiving throughout the constituency.

Nazira has historically been a stronghold for the Congress party.

In the 2016 Assembly elections, senior Congress figure Debabrata Saikia managed to retain his seat with a significant margin, even as the BJP ascended to power in the state.

He continued his winning streak in the 2021 elections, once again defeating BJP contenders and reinforcing his status as a pivotal Congress leader in Upper Assam.

Debabrata Saikia, a well-known Congress figure in Assam, currently holds the position of Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly.

Recognized for his organizational prowess and grassroots connections, Saikia has played a vital role in maintaining the Congress’s relevance in Upper Assam, despite the BJP's increasing influence in the area.

Additionally, he carries a notable political legacy as the son of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia.

The late leader was an influential persona in Assam politics, having served multiple terms as Chief Minister and significantly impacting the state’s political environment during challenging times.

Despite this rich legacy and previous electoral victories, the BJP is optimistic that anti-incumbency sentiments and a robust development narrative may sway the outcome in their favor in Nazira, paving the way for an exciting contest in the elections slated for April 9.

Point of View

The upcoming Assam Assembly elections present a significant political battleground, especially in traditionally held seats like Nazira. With the BJP's rising influence and the historical prominence of Congress, the electoral dynamics are set for a critical shift.
