Should Assamese People Lead the Charge to Safeguard Their Identity?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 1 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised alarms regarding what he identifies as an escalating identity crisis for the Assamese community. He emphasized that the community must actively engage in the struggle to preserve their Assamese identity, as they are becoming a minority in areas historically governed by Mahabir Chilarai and Maharaj Naranarayan.
During the 516th Biswa Mahabir Chilarai Divas celebrations held in Pipora Dookan, Darrang district, Sarma voiced deep concerns over the aggressive encroachment and demographic shifts affecting significant portions of the Chilarai-Naranarayan region.
He highlighted that regions once pivotal to Assam’s cultural and political heritage are experiencing a gradual decline in indigenous presence.
“The Assamese community is contending with an identity crisis. In territories once ruled by Chilarai and Naranarayan, Assamese individuals are now finding themselves as a minority,” the Chief Minister remarked. He urged the populace to not rely solely on governmental efforts to defend their heritage and identity.
While acknowledging that the state government has spent the past five years working to reclaim lost identity, he stated that this battle cannot solely rely on administrative initiatives.
“Government can take initial steps, but the community must spearhead this movement,” Sarma declared, referring to the Garukhuti land reclamation drive as merely the inception of a more prolonged struggle.
He underlined the plight of the Koch Rajbongshi community, noting that within the undivided Goalpara district, this community is fighting to maintain its identity amidst significant encroachment by immigrants from Bangladesh.
Expressing profound respect for Mahabir Chilarai, Sarma characterized him not only as a brave military leader but also as a visionary who laid the groundwork for Assam’s cultural, spiritual, and social renaissance.
He noted that Chilarai’s support for Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev sparked a cultural renaissance, with the famed ‘Vrindavani Vastra’ serving as a lasting emblem of this awakening.
Calling upon the everlasting inspirations of Mahabir Chilarai and Lachit Barphukan, Sarma encouraged Assamese society to draw strength from their courage and sacrifices to navigate contemporary challenges and sustain their civilizational heritage.
