Why Did Abhishek Banerjee Direct Party BLAs to 'Shadow' BLOs During the SIR Exercise?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Oct 31 (NationPress) The general secretary of Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha representative, Abhishek Banerjee, has given directives to the party's booth-level agents (BLAs) to closely monitor the booth-level officers (BLOs) appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) during the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise, which is set to commence on November 4.
The BLOs play a vital role in the initial phase of the three-stage SIR exercise, as they will visit every household to distribute enumeration forms and gather pertinent voter information. The draft voters’ list for the state will be revealed at the conclusion of this first phase.
Consequently, it is believed that the BLAs' instructions to shadow the BLOs are specifically aimed at this initial phase.
This directive was issued during a virtual organizational meeting chaired by Abhishek Banerjee, where party leaders convened to assign responsibilities among elected officials, state cabinet members, and grassroots workers for the SIR.
“The meeting also concluded with the decision to establish area-specific help desks throughout the state to assist voters starting November 4. These help desks will remain operational until the SIR exercise is fully completed, with a total of 6,200 desks available statewide, functioning daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” shared a party leader who participated in the meeting.
The last SIR conducted in West Bengal was in 2002, and this current revision is based on the 2002 voters’ list.
The SIR has historically been a contentious issue in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress has criticized the SIR as an indirect method to implement the NRC in the state, while the BJP argues that the Trinamool Congress is opposing it out of fear that the names of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators will be removed from the voters’ list.
