Dhaka, May 20 (NationPress) In a remarkable move that underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has officially approved Air Sial, a private Pakistani airline, to initiate direct flights connecting Dhaka and Karachi.
According to CAAB Chairman Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan, a formal notification will be issued later today, enabling the ministry to assign a General Sales Agent (GSA) and request flight slots.
Once operational, Air Sial flights will facilitate travel for Bangladeshi passengers not only to Pakistan but also for transit to other global destinations, as reported by bdnews24.com.
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) previously revitalized the proposal for direct flights during a meeting with Bangladesh's Travel and Tourism Advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin in Dhaka on January 12, 2023.
FPCCI President noted, “Pakistani businesses are eager to invest and grow trade with Bangladesh. Nevertheless, issues such as visa complexities and the absence of direct flights have posed significant hurdles.”
The discussions encompassed various topics, including bilateral trade, visa simplification, the launch of direct flight operations, and future investment opportunities.
The Pakistani business delegation revealed its interest in investing in sectors such as agriculture, education, tourism, and ceramics in Bangladesh. They also invited Bangladeshi businesses to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan under the Pakistani government's export facilitation scheme, mentioning an upcoming trade expo in Bangladesh.
The most recent Pakistani airline to operate direct flights to Bangladesh was Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which halted operations on this route in 2018 due to low booking rates and financial struggles.
In February, CAAB had authorized Fly Jinnah to conduct direct flights on the Karachi-Dhaka route.
As reported by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain, indicated that if approved, Air Sial could commence flights to Dhaka within two months.
The revival of direct flights is gaining traction under the current administration led by Mohammad Yunus, following a positive shift in Dhaka-Islamabad relations after the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.
