Bangladesh Diplomatic Missions in Agartala and Guwahati Mark ‘Vijay Diwas’ with Subdued Observance

Guwahati/Agartala, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Assistant High Commissions (AHC) in Guwahati and Agartala commemorated the 53rd anniversary of ‘Vijay Diwas’ on Monday in a notably subdued manner.

According to sources, officials from the AHCs in Guwahati and Agartala participated only in a closed-door celebration, with no guests invited to this year’s event.

In previous occasions, the AHCs in Guwahati and Agartala observed ‘Vijay Diwas’ with great enthusiasm, inviting significant Indian dignitaries and intellectuals, while artists from both India and Bangladesh showcased various cultural performances.

Prominent writer Debabrata Deb Roy mentioned that due to the altered political landscape in Bangladesh following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League regime on August 5, the Bangladesh missions may have opted for a more discreet approach to Monday's celebrations.

“For many years, I along with numerous Indian intellectuals, poets, writers, and singers participated in the ‘Vijay Diwas’, Bangladesh National Day (observed on March 26), and other significant celebrations. However, this year, due to the changing circumstances in the neighboring country, Monday's event was conducted in a more subdued manner,” Roy explained to IANS.

Following a security breach at the Bangladesh AHC office in Agartala on December 2, the mission has suspended all visa and consular services indefinitely.

This incident reportedly occurred during a protest by a group against the violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

The West Tripura District Superintendent of Police has suspended three Sub-Inspectors — Dilu Jamatia, Debabrata Sinha, and Joynal Hossain — and removed Assistant Commandant (a DSP rank officer) Kanti Nath Ghosh from his position due to their negligence during the December 2 protests.

The Tripura government has also mandated an investigation into the December 2 incident, with the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Southern Range, assigned to carry out the inquiry.

In light of the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of ISKCON preacher Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh, various organizations have been orchestrating a series of protests, demonstrations, and rallies throughout different states in the northeast region almost daily.
