Dhaka, Feb 13 (NationPress) Bangladesh experienced what many are calling one of its most tranquil and engaging elections in recent history, as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led coalition achieved a convincing victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, setting the stage for Tarique Rahman to establish the next government.

In conversations with IANS in Dhaka, local citizens expressed their contentment with the orderly election process. “It was a commendable election. The public was actively involved, and there were no incidents of violence, Alhamdulillah. We anticipated disruptions, but thankfully it concluded peacefully. The election was conducted fairly and freely,” remarked a voter.

Another participant, Misba Rehman, emphasized the importance of this electoral event for everyday citizens. “This was a commendable election. As an everyday citizen, I experienced it as free and fair, with minimal violence. Everyone was eager to vote, especially the youth. They showed great enthusiasm, and there were no manipulative actions,” he stated.

He further remarked that the triumph brings significant duties. “I view this as a substantial win for them, but it also carries major responsibilities. There are considerable challenges ahead, particularly with the economy struggling and ongoing global instability,” he added.

Former President of the Economic Reporters' Forum, Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha, echoed similar thoughts, declaring the result a “significant win” for the BNP. “Having won most seats, I would label this an important victory for the BNP. They must work diligently and sincerely to gain the public's trust. The populace has high hopes for them, and I trust the BNP will utilize its experience to effectively serve the people and the nation,” he commented.

He referred to it as a definitive mandate, stating, “This is the people's mandate. I believe the electorate voted wisely, and the BNP has been striving for years to earn their trust. That is why the BNP achieved this overwhelming victory.”

As per unofficial reports shared by local media, the BNP-led coalition has claimed 210 seats, positioning party chairman Tarique Rahman to lead the forthcoming government.

Earlier in the day, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Tarique Rahman on the electoral success. Through a message on social media platform X, he noted that the mandate signifies the trust the Bangladeshi populace has in his leadership and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.

Tarique, who cast his ballot at Gulshan Model High School and College Centre in Dhaka, expressed optimism regarding his party’s chances, stating that the people of Bangladesh had awaited this moment for over a decade.

The son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Tarique took over the leadership of the BNP following his mother’s passing last year. With this electoral success, he is now poised to guide Bangladesh through a period marked by economic challenges and a complex global landscape.
