Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 13 (NationPress) Sheikh Rabiul Alam of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has emerged victorious in the Dhaka-10 constituency, proclaiming the recently held parliamentary elections as the most credible he has ever seen in his political journey.
In an interview with IANS, Alam remarked that this election signifies a pivotal moment for the democratic landscape of Bangladesh. “I have never encountered such a fair election in Bangladesh before. Having witnessed five to six elections previously, nothing has compared to this one. This is a trustworthy election. Every party took part, and thankfully, there was no violence,” he stated.
He attributed the party’s significant mandate to the leadership of Tarique Rahman and emphasized that the citizens have placed considerable faith in the BNP. “With Tarique Rahman at the helm, a new government will be formed in Bangladesh. The public harbors great hopes and expectations for this government. The BNP is committed to governing in alignment with the people’s aspirations — which is why such a mandate was received,” he articulated.
Alam acknowledged that the party's responsibilities have escalated significantly. “The future direction of Bangladesh now hinges on the BNP. Our responsibility has increased manifold,” he stressed, emphasizing the need for responsive and accountable governance.
Discussing foreign relations, Alam highlighted the necessity of fostering amicable ties with India. “We aspire for a respectful and sovereign relationship with New Delhi. India will always be our ally. We want India to engage with the citizens of Bangladesh. We appreciate their goodwill towards us. The governments of Bangladesh and India will collaborate constructively,” he affirmed.
As per the official results, Alam received 80,436 votes while representing the BNP’s paddy sheaf symbol and defeated Md Jasim Uddin Sarkar from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, who garnered 77,136 votes with the scales symbol.
With this triumph in Dhaka-10, Alam joins an expanding roster of BNP leaders poised to establish the next government following the party's remarkable performance in the elections.
