New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday offered heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman for steering the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a significant victory in the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh.
Utilizing the social media platform X, PM Modi expressed, “I send my sincere congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman for guiding BNP to a notable victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This achievement reflects the confidence of the Bangladeshi populace in your leadership.”
He further emphasized that India will remain committed to supporting a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.
“India will persist in its support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with you to enhance our multifaceted partnership and propel our mutual development objectives forward,” added the Prime Minister.
The BNP and its coalition have declared a significant win in the 13th parliamentary elections, as reported by local media, referencing unofficial results.
The results currently indicate that the BNP-led coalition has claimed 210 seats, paving the way for the establishment of a new government.
According to sources within the party, the Bangladeshi Bengali Daily 'Jugantor' reports that party chairman Tarique Rahman will be at the helm, marking the return of a male Prime Minister in Bangladesh for the first time in nearly 35 years.
Following the vote tally on Thursday night, unofficial results from various electoral districts were revealed.
In the Dhaka-17 constituency, unofficial results show Tarique garnered 72,699 votes, defeating his nearest competitor, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate S.M. Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes, as reported by the Bangladeshi Bengali daily 'Prothom Alo'.
Dhaka Divisional Commissioner (Returning Officer) Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury announced the results on Friday morning, noting that voting took place across 125 centers, including postal voting, within the Dhaka-17 constituency. Tarique's victory margin was 4,399 votes.
Additionally, Tarique was informally elected from the Bogra-6 constituency, where he obtained 216,284 votes from 150 centers. His closest rival, Jamaat candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, received 97,626 votes under the party's scale symbol.
Earlier on Thursday, Tarique expressed his contentment after casting his vote in the national elections, emphasizing his complete confidence in his party's success, according to local media reports.
He cast his vote at the Gulshan Model High School and College Centre in Dhaka. After voting, he informed reporters that the people of Bangladesh had been anticipating this moment for over a decade, as reported by the leading Bangladeshi news outlet UNB.
Tarique is the son of former Bangladeshi President Gen. Ziaur Rahman, who came to power following a series of coups and later established the BNP before taking the presidency in 1977.
His mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, held office during two separate tenures from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006.
After Khaleda Zia's passing in December last year, Tarique took over the leadership of the BNP and is now poised to lead the nation.
