Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephonic discussion with Tarique Rehman, the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Friday. He extended his congratulations for the BNP's success in the recent elections in Bangladesh. PM Modi also reiterated India’s backing for Rehman’s efforts to meet the aspirations of the Bangladeshi populace.
"I was pleased to converse with Mr. Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the significant victory in the Bangladesh elections. I expressed my best wishes and support for his mission to fulfill the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people. As neighboring countries with profound historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s dedication to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our nations," PM Modi shared on X following their conversation.
This dialogue between PM Modi and Tarique Rehman arose after the BNP-led coalition declared a substantial victory, capturing 210 seats and exceeding the majority threshold, thus clearing the path for establishing a new government.
Earlier that day, PM Modi had sent his warmest regards to Tarique Rahman for steering his party to a notable victory in the parliamentary elections.
"I convey my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman for leading the BNP to a remarkable victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This success reflects the trust the Bangladeshi people have in your leadership," he stated on X after the results were disclosed in Dhaka.
"India will persist in supporting a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with you to enhance our multifaceted relations and promote our shared development objectives," added Prime Minister Modi.
Tarique Rehman is expected to be sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Saturday, marking the return of a male Prime Minister after nearly 35 years. While the BNP is heading towards a landslide victory, the radical Jamaat-e-Islami is projected to secure a distant second place.
Tarique Rehman took over the leadership of the BNP following the death of his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, last December. He is also the son of former President Ziaur Rahman, who founded the BNP.
