What Caused the Baramati Crash Involving a VSR Ventures Aircraft?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) A Learjet 45 aircraft tragically crashed in Baramati, Maharashtra on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four other individuals onboard. This aircraft had a previous incident involving a landing mishap at the Mumbai airport in September 2023, as confirmed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The aircraft was operated by VSR Ventures Private Limited, which has a history of operational difficulties with its fleet.
On September 14, 2023, another Learjet 45 registered as VT-DBL encountered a landing accident in Mumbai. This incident is still under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
Reports indicate that six passengers were aboard the plane during the September incident, and all survived, thanks to favorable circumstances despite low visibility and rain.
VSR Ventures operates a diverse fleet, including seven Learjet 45 units, five Embraer 135BJ aircraft, four King Air B200s, and one Pilatus PC-12.
The company’s Air Operator Permit was first issued in 2014 and was renewed in April 2023, remaining valid until 2028, according to the Ministry.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) performed a regulatory audit of the operator in February 2025, which reported no Level-I safety findings at that time.
Data provided by the Ministry indicates that the flight crew was highly skilled. The pilot-in-command possessed an Airline Transport Pilot Licence with over 15,000 flying hours, with his last medical check-up in November 2025 and proficiency checks updated in August 2025.
The co-pilot held a Commercial Pilot Licence with 1,500 flying hours, having successfully completed his last proficiency check in July 2025. The AAIB has taken charge of the investigation into the Baramati crash.
AAIB Director General G.V.G. Yugandhar is on-site to oversee the investigation personally.
Ajit Pawar was en route from Mumbai to Baramati to participate in local body elections.
Investigation teams are currently securing the crash site to retrieve the flight data recorders.
