Did Bengal Governor Ananda Bose Criticize Kerala’s NSS Leadership Over Mannam Samadhi Tribute?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 5 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose vehemently criticized the leadership of the Nair Service Society (NSS) in Kerala, claiming that he was obstructed from paying floral respects at the Mannam Samadhi, the memorial dedicated to NSS founder Mannathu Padmanabhan, during a visit a few years back.
Addressing an event related to Mannam Jayanti in New Delhi on Sunday, Bose, a former IAS officer hailing from Kerala, questioned if the community’s heritage had become a “monopoly” of an individual.
“Is the act of offering floral tributes at Mannam Samadhi not a right for every member of the Nair community? Can one person claim exclusive rights to it?” the Governor inquired, voicing his strong displeasure over an incident he stated occurred during a visit to the NSS headquarters in Changanassery’s Perunna in southern Kerala.
Bose, who introduced himself as a “Karayogam Nair” (a member of the local units of the NSS), emphasized that the memorial is for the entire community, not just a singular leader.
In a pointed remark directed at the current NSS administration, he stated, “I do not go to Perunna to meet gatekeepers.”
This incident reportedly unfolded in November 2022 when Bose visited Mannam Samadhi prior to taking office as the West Bengal Governor. In response to the allegations, NSS General Secretary G. Sukumaran Nair mentioned he was unaware of any such occurrence.
The Governor of Bengal further disclosed that the “negligence” and “disrespect” he experienced happened just before he took on his constitutional responsibilities. He described the events at Perunna as “saddening” and inconsistent with the organization’s values.
In what appears to be a symbolic challenge to the Perunna leadership, Governor Bose declared his plan to establish a memorial for Mannathu Padmanabhan in New Delhi.
To kickstart this initiative, he committed to donating one month of his official salary.
“Mannam’s legacy deserves global recognition. A memorial in the national capital will elevate his contributions to social reform,” Bose stated.
The NSS claims to maintain neutrality concerning all political parties, although it is often viewed as being aligned with the Congress.
This conflict between the Bengal Governor and NSS leadership represents a rare public clash involving a prominent constitutional figure and one of Kerala’s influential community organizations.
