Kolkata, Feb 21 (NationPress) The Chairman of English Bazar Municipality in West Bengal's Malda district filed a police complaint on Friday after receiving extortion messages and calls allegedly from the D-Company.

Malda district police have initiated an investigation into the situation and have increased the security measures for Municipality Chairman and former state minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury.

According to the police complaint lodged by Chowdhury, he received two consecutive messages on his mobile phone in the past few days, with the sender claiming to be Pradeep of D-Company. The messages threatened the elimination of his entire family unless he paid Rs 20 lakh within 24 hours.

Initially, Chowdhury dismissed the messages as a prank, but after receiving a phone call on Friday morning from someone identifying himself as Pradeep from D-Company with the same threat, he took the matter seriously and promptly notified the local police.

Chowdhury asserted to the media that he was not intimidated by the threat call, stating, “I have faced life threats several times in the past. But as a duty, I informed the police, and they are investigating the matter now.”

The BJP district leadership in Malda urged for an investigation into whether the threat call and messages genuinely originated from D-Company or from a rival faction of Trinamool Congress in the district.

The Malda police are treating this matter with utmost seriousness, particularly in light of the recent murder of Trinamool municipal councillor Dulal Sarkar a.k.a. Babla, who was shot dead in broad daylight last month.

Infighting within the ruling party in the district has been identified as a potential motive behind the murder, with Trinamool's Malda town President and the party’s district Hindi cell chief Narendra Nath Tiwari being implicated as the mastermind behind the killing. He has since been arrested.

D-Company is an organized crime syndicate established in Mumbai by infamous gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
