Bengal CM Initiates Top-Level Investigation into the Murder of TMC Councillor in Malda

Kolkata, Jan 2 (NationPress) Firhad Hakim, the West Bengal Minister responsible for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development and the Kolkata Mayor, confirmed on Thursday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has mandated a top-level investigation into the heinous murder of Trinamool Congress councillor from the English Bazar municipality in Malda district, Dulal Sarkar, also referred to as Babla, in broad daylight.

"He was a highly esteemed leader in the community. We insist that the police swiftly apprehend the suspects, incarcerate them, and guarantee severe penalties. Our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already indicated that there will be a thorough investigation into this incident. Those behind this plot will be identified and held accountable. We are optimistic that the police will locate the culprits promptly," Hakim stated.

Earlier in the day, while conducting an administrative review at the State Secretariat Nabanna, the Chief Minister criticized Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav, holding him responsible for the unfortunate event.

"Our councillor in Malda lost his life today due to the negligence of the District Police Superintendent. He had previously been under police protection, which was subsequently revoked. This represents a clear failure on the part of law enforcement. Babla was with me from the very start," Banerjee remarked.

Sarkar, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was in critical condition from the onset.

Witnesses stated that he was assaulted while positioned at a crowded intersection in the vicinity.

Three helmeted attackers arrived on a motorcycle, with one opening fire.

The initial two shots missed their mark, but the third struck Sarkar in the head.

District police sources indicated that the attack seemed to be a premeditated murder, with the perpetrators likely aware of Sarkar's movements and whereabouts at the time.

It remains uncertain whether the murder was politically motivated or if a personal vendetta is involved.
