Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) Seven individuals have been detained in relation to the murder of Trinamool Congress councillor Dulal Sarkar in the Malda district of West Bengal, according to police reports released on Friday.
The Chairman of English Bazar municipality, Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, noted that one of those arrested hails from Katihar district in the adjacent state of Bihar.
Choudhury informed the media, "A total of five firearms have been recovered. Contract killers were hired for the crime. What I came to know is that the deal was fixed at Rs 10 lakh."
Police sources indicated that among the seven suspects, two were apprehended on Thursday evening, just hours after Sarkar was pronounced dead at Malda Medical College and Hospital, where he was receiving treatment after being shot at close range earlier that day.
According to a district police official, "After interrogating those two, we acquired information about the other five and arrested them from their hideout late Thursday night."
The motive for the crime remains unclear at this time.
On Thursday evening, Firhad Hakim, the West Bengal Minister overseeing the Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department and Kolkata Mayor, stated that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered an investigation into Sarkar's murder.
During an administrative review meeting held at the State Secretariat Nabanna, the Chief Minister criticized Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav and held him responsible for the incident.
Sarkar was attacked on Thursday morning while positioned at a crowded intersection in the area. Three assailants wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle, and one of them opened fire.
The first two shots missed their target, but the third struck Sarkar in the head.
