Trinamool Official Detained in Connection with Councillor's Homicide in Bengal

Kolkata, Jan 8 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police, as part of their investigation into the gruesome murder of Dulal Sarkar, known as Babla, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Ward number 22 of the English Bazar Municipality in Malda district, arrested a party block president on Wednesday for allegedly orchestrating the attack.

Sarkar was killed on January 2.

The individual taken into custody has been identified as Narendra Nath Tiwari, the Malda town president of the Trinamool Congress, and he also serves as the district president of the party's Hindi cell.

Additionally, Tiwari’s close associate, Swapan Sharma, has also been arrested concerning this case.

While the police have not yet determined the precise motive behind the murder, reports indicate a history of personal rivalry between Sarkar and Tiwari.

Interestingly, the leadership of the Trinamool Congress, who typically blame the BJP for any violence against their members, has refrained from doing so in this instance.

In fact, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the district police for their failure to prevent Sarkar's murder. Following the news of the murder on January 2 afternoon, she stated that the incident was a result of the negligence shown by the district police superintendent.

“Previously, Babla had security protection, which was later revoked. This indicates lapses on the part of the police. Babla has been with me from the start,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Sarkar was attacked on the morning of January 2 while standing at a crowded intersection. Three assailants wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle, and one of them opened fire. The first two shots missed their target, but the third struck Sarkar in the head. He was swiftly transported to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
