Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police have apprehended a contract killer and a sharpshooter from the neighboring state of Bihar in relation to the heinous murder of Dulal Sarkar, also known as Babla. He was a councillor from ward number 22 of the English Bazar Municipality in Malda district, with the tragic incident occurring on January 2.

The individual, recognized as Md Asrar (22), was taken into custody late Sunday night at his home in Purnea district of Bihar. This marks the eighth arrest linked to the case.

The mastermind behind the murder of Sarkar, as identified and detained by the police, is Narendra Nath Tiwari, who serves as the Malda town president for the Trinamool Congress and leads the party's Hindi cell for the district.

Tiwari's arrest has brought to light significant factional disputes within the Trinamool Congress, especially in Malda district.

Chaitali Sarkar, the widow of the slain councillor, maintains that more powerful figures are involved in her husband’s murder, whose identities remain undisclosed.

Despite claims from Tiwari that he is a victim of conspiracy, Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury, the chairman of the English Bazar Municipality, asserted that Tiwari had long been intent on eliminating Babla.

“There existed a personal rivalry between Babla and Tiwari for quite some time. Tiwari had previously threatened Babla with severe outcomes. It is likely that Tiwari hired contract killers to carry out the assassination,” Chowdhury stated.

On the day of the murder, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held the district police accountable for failing to prevent Sarkar's murder. Following the incident on January 2, the Chief Minister remarked that the tragedy was a result of the negligent approach of the district police superintendent.

“Babla had previously been provided with a security detail that was later withdrawn. This indicates clear lapses on the part of the police. Babla was with me from the start,” she expressed on the day of the incident.

Sarkar was assaulted on the morning of January 2 while standing at a busy intersection. Three assailants wearing helmets arrived on a motorcycle, with one opening fire. The first two shots missed, but the third struck Sarkar in the head. He was promptly transported to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
