Trinamool Congress Councilor in Malda Dies from Gunshot Wounds, Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Police for Security Failures

Kolkata, Jan 2 (NationPress) Dulal Sarkar, also referred to as Babla, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor from Ward 22 of English Bazar Municipality in Malda district, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon after being shot in broad daylight during the morning hours. He had been receiving treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital following the attack.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed Sarkar's passing during an administrative review meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna. She expressed fierce criticism of Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav, blaming him for the incident.
“Our councilor in Malda has been killed today due to the negligent approach of the district police superintendent. He was previously assigned security, which was later revoked. This is a clear failure on the part of the police. Babla has been with me from the start,” Banerjee stated.
The Chief Minister revealed that Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim and state Minister Sabina Yasmin would travel to Malda to manage the situation.
Sarkar, who sustained a bullet wound to the head, was in a critical state from the beginning. Eyewitnesses reported that he was shot while standing at a bustling intersection in the area. Three assailants wearing helmets approached on a motorcycle, and one of them opened fire. The first two shots missed, but the third hit Sarkar in the head.
Authorities began an investigation right after the shooting, but as of the latest updates, the attackers were still at large.
District police sources indicated that the attack seemed to be a premeditated murder, with the assailants appearing to have knowledge of Sarkar’s movements and whereabouts.
It remains uncertain whether the motive for the murder was political or stemmed from personal conflicts.
Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav is currently investigating the situation.
