New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has vehemently criticized the establishment of an ad-hoc Committee to oversee its operations, labeling it as an illegal and outrageous infringement on the autonomy of a National Sports Federation (NSF). This stance was conveyed in a letter from the BFI President to P.T. Usha, the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
According to the BFI's announcement on Monday, “The IOA failed to consult with BFI office-bearers or its President prior to making this decision.”
“In accordance with Article 21.5 of the IOA constitution, any decision regarding NSFs requires prior consultation with the parent International Federation and the approval of the IOA Executive Committee. Given the NSF’s autonomous status, neither of these procedures was followed,” the BFI stated.
The IOA lacks authority over the election processes of NSFs; however, this order has been issued in a manner that raises serious concerns about its motives.
Furthermore, it is crucial to note that communication regarding the elections for BFI had already been initiated with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) on February 2. The BFI expressed surprise at the IOA's decision to intervene.
The statement indicated that the BFI intends to file a petition to annul this unlawful order in the Delhi High Court promptly.
“It’s important to mention a ruling issued today, where the Hon’ble Delhi High Court nullified the IOA’s decision to create an ad-hoc panel for the Bihar Olympic Association,” the BFI asserted.
Earlier that day, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed a five-member ad-hoc Committee, including senior boxer Shiva Thapa, to handle the daily operations of the organization until all matters are resolved.
The Ad-hoc Committee will also include administrators Madhukant Pathak, Rajesh Bhandari, Dr. D.P Bhatt, and Virendra Singh Thakur, who will take “immediate steps to address grievances from the boxing community, support athlete participation in forthcoming international events, and expedite the IBF elections.”
