Will Bharat Taxi Transform India's Ride-Hailing Landscape in Three Years?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah unveiled Bharat Taxi, India's pioneering cooperative-focused ride-hailing platform, following a successful two-month pilot. He announced that the service is set to be launched nationwide within the next three years.
Initially available in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, Bharat Taxi will expand to all states and Union Territories within two years. This initiative allows profits to be shared directly with drivers associated with the platform. Users can request cars, auto-rickshaws, and bikes through this digital service.
HM Shah stated at the launch event, "In three years, Bharat Taxi will be operational throughout the nation, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Dwarka to Kamakhya."
He further emphasized, "When this cooperative taxi initiative began, we could not foresee its potential, but it will expand across the nation and benefit taxi drivers in the years to come."
Shah clarified that the government is not entering the taxi sector; rather, this is a cooperative venture where the taxi operators themselves hold ownership. He highlighted that every driver partaking in this cooperative will possess ownership, ensuring their welfare.
Bharat Taxi is marketed as a driver-owned mobility service, adopting a zero-commission model during its initial phase, ensuring that 100% of ride payments go directly to the drivers.
The Ministry of Cooperation indicated that this platform aims to liberate drivers, known as Sarathis, from exploitative aggregator models. The minimum fare structure includes Rs 30 for rides up to 4 km, Rs 23 per km for rides between 4-12 km, and Rs 18 per km for longer distances.
Bharat Taxi also collaborates with public transport systems like the Metro, enabling users to organize and complete journeys using multiple transport modes via a single application. Unlike existing services, Bharat Taxi intends to eliminate surge pricing, though dynamic pricing may be applied in particular circumstances.
The app, accessible on both Android and iOS, has achieved a ranking of ninth on the Google Play Store and thirteenth on Apple’s App Store. Signing up requires basic information such as a mobile number, name, and email address.
