Is the Launch of ‘Bharat Taxi’ a Game-Changer for Drivers and Passengers?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 5 (NationPress) India’s inaugural cooperative cab service, Bharat Taxi, was launched today, introducing an innovative ride-hailing model aimed at safeguarding the interests of drivers while ensuring fair rates for passengers.
Jitu Vaghani, the spokesperson for the Gujarat Government, termed this initiative historic and commended everyone who contributed to bringing this service to fruition.
In his remarks during the launch, Vaghani stated: “The introduction of Bharat Taxi marks a significant milestone for our nation. This service aligns with the vision of ‘Sahkar thi Samruddhi’ — prosperity through cooperation — as envisioned by Prime Minister Modi and Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.
He pointed out that the taxi industry has predominantly been controlled by private firms, where drivers often face hefty commission fees that diminish their earnings. “In contrast, this cooperative model prioritizes drivers’ welfare and enhances their financial stability,” he emphasized.
Vaghani further remarked, “This is the world’s largest and first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, providing advantages not just for drivers but also for passengers. There will be no hidden fees or overpriced fares, with technology guaranteeing passenger safety.”
Union Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the service in New Delhi, underscoring the cooperative ethos: “Sarathi Hi Malik — the driver is the owner. This framework empowers drivers, enabling them to keep the entire fare without paying commissions to middlemen. Bharat Taxi will be launched nationwide, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Dwarka to Kamakhya.”
Initially, Bharat Taxi began pilot operations on December 2 of the previous year in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, attracting over 300,000 drivers and 100,000 users.
During the pilot phase, around 10,000 rides were completed daily, resulting in direct earnings of ₹10 crore for drivers.
Six exemplary drivers, dubbed “Sarathis,” were awarded share certificates and received insurance coverage for personal accidents and family health.
Vaghani described this initiative as a transformative advancement for cooperative endeavors in transportation. “Gujarat has consistently pioneered cooperative initiatives. Following successful ventures like Amul and IFFCO, Bharat Taxi now extends cooperative values to the transportation sector,” he stated.
Officials mentioned that the platform facilitates bookings for cars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers.
This cooperative framework is backed by eight leading cooperative organizations and includes initiatives aimed at increasing female participation, such as the “Bike Didi” program.
The unveiling of Bharat Taxi is recognized as a significant step towards providing fair chances for drivers, equitable pricing for passengers, and a homegrown alternative to private ride-hailing services.
