The Bihar government on Thursday, 16 July launched the 'Smart Class' initiative across 150 government schools in Patna, marking one of the state's most ambitious digital education drives to date. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary inaugurated the programme at the Government Girls' Higher Secondary School in Shastri Nagar, framing it as a structural shift in how public schools deliver learning.

What the Smart Class Initiative Covers

Under the programme, students of Classes 9 to 12 will gain access to technology-enabled instruction through live and interactive online classes, lectures by subject experts, digital study materials and e-notes, recorded video lectures for self-paced revision, and regular mock tests. The initiative is designed to make classroom teaching more engaging by incorporating audio-visual presentations, animations, and multimedia content to break down complex concepts.

Students will also be able to revisit recorded lessons at their own pace — a feature the government says will strengthen conceptual understanding and improve examination preparedness. Officials stated that the goal is to give students in government schools digital learning facilities comparable to those typically found in private institutions.

CM Choudhary at the Inauguration

During the launch, Chief Minister Choudhary visited a functioning smart classroom, sat alongside students, and observed a live digital science lesson on the structure and functions of a cell. He also interacted with students directly, asking questions to gauge their comprehension of the topic.

Choudhary said the state government's objective is not merely to introduce new technology but to ensure that every student genuinely benefits from quality digital education — a distinction, he indicated, that will guide how the programme is monitored going forward.

Free JEE and NEET Coaching in 10 Model Schools

In a separate announcement made on the same occasion, the Chief Minister said the state government will introduce free coaching for JEE and NEET in 10 model schools in Patna. The programme targets academically capable students from economically weaker backgrounds who are unable to afford private coaching institutes.

Officials said the initiative is explicitly designed to promote educational equity — ensuring that financial constraints do not bar deserving students from preparing for engineering and medical entrance examinations. This comes amid growing concern across India that access to competitive exam coaching has become increasingly stratified by income.

Broader Education Push in Bihar

The Smart Class project and the free coaching programme together form part of the Bihar government's wider effort to modernise public education through technology, raise academic outcomes, and expand access to quality learning across the state. Notably, concentrating the initial rollout in Patna allows the government to test implementation quality before a potential statewide expansion.

With competitive exam pressure intensifying and private coaching costs rising sharply, Bihar's twin announcements signal a policy intent to use public infrastructure as a leveller — though the scale of execution and quality monitoring will determine whether that intent translates into outcomes.
