Patna, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Bihar Urban Development and Housing Department has introduced the municipal property tax incentive, interest and penalty waiver scheme 2025, offering significant relief to property tax defaulters in the state's urban regions.
This initiative will be active until March 31, 2026.
Through this program, those who have neglected to pay their tax obligations for years can now settle their outstanding amounts without incurring any interest or penalties.
The Lakhisarai Municipal Council has initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign focused on this scheme.
Raman Kumar, the Executive Officer of the Lakhisarai Municipal Council, is spearheading an extensive outreach effort throughout the city.
“We've set up billboards at key junctions, encouraging urban residents to seize this limited-time opportunity for relief,” Kumar stated.
The first holding survey in Lakhisarai was executed in 2006, identifying over 20,000 holdings.
“At that time, tax collection was alarmingly low, with lakhs of rupees going uncollected annually. Many citizens displayed apathy towards paying their municipal taxes, resulting in a surge of long-term defaulters,” Kumar elaborated.
“Currently, over Rs 1.5 crore remains outstanding, with between 3,000 to 4,000 residents having not paid their holding tax even once since 2006,” he added.
“To tackle this issue, the department has instituted a substantial waiver for defaulters until March 31, 2026. Any individual can clear their dues during this timeframe without facing any extra charges,” he stated.
This year, the Municipal Council has thus far collected Rs 90 lakh in revenue—an encouraging increase attributed in part to the new scheme and ongoing awareness initiatives.
In addition to Lakhisarai, this scheme has been rolled out statewide, providing considerable relief to residents, particularly those in older urban homes with pending holding tax obligations.
Following the establishment of the new government in Bihar, several welfare-oriented initiatives are anticipated to be launched under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's leadership.
