Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led state government for the ongoing uncertainties regarding the Dubai-Bhubaneswar direct flight service. The party is calling for immediate governmental action to protect tourism, trade, and connectivity.
The regional political party highlighted in a press release that the Dubai-Bhubaneswar direct flight service was inaugurated by the BJD government at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on May 15, 2023. They emphasized that this service, operating three times a week, is vital for over 40,000 Odias residing in the UAE.
The BJD urged the government to act swiftly to protect the sectors of tourism, trade, and connectivity. They also pointed out that their administration had allocated Rs 100 crore annually as viability gap funding to ensure the service's long-term sustainability.
Furthermore, they stressed that the introduction of this direct flight in 2023 has established Dubai as a key global travel hub, providing new opportunities for investment, trade, and tourism for Odisha, in addition to offering various options for leisure travelers from around the globe wishing to visit the state.
Party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty sharply rebuked the BJP government for its decision to terminate the direct flight service between Dubai and Bhubaneswar.
“The termination of the direct flight service reflects the BJP Government's incompetence. This move will hinder the mobility and connectivity for over 40,000 Odias in the UAE. The Odia diaspora is facing significant challenges, especially with IndiGo planning to cease the Dubai-Bhubaneswar direct flight by March 2026,” Mohanty asserted.
The BJD also highlighted that the current operational issues at IndiGo Airlines have led to uncertainties regarding the future of this vital international flight between Odisha and the UAE.
They indicated that the IndiGo service between Dubai and Bhubaneswar is expected to be discontinued from March 30, 2026, raising alarms among travelers and the Odia community in the Gulf region.
“Currently, online bookings for the Dubai-Bhubaneswar route are not being accepted beyond March 30, 2026. This situation has caused distress among travelers, including non-resident Odias and various stakeholders dependent on this route for travel, business, and tourism,” Mohanty stated.
The Odisha Samaj UAE (OSUAE), representing the Odia diaspora in the Emirates, has reached out to the Chief Secretary of Odisha, requesting state government intervention to engage with relevant authorities and the airline to ensure the retention of this essential air link between Dubai and Bhubaneswar.
The organization also brought to the government's attention the discontinuation of the thrice-weekly direct flight between Abu Dhabi and Bhubaneswar, which has significantly hampered air connectivity for many individuals in Abu Dhabi and nearby areas.
