Bhubaneswar, Nov 9 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has formally requested the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R.S. Gopalan for action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the presence of their posters and banners on government properties, including electricity poles and the walls of government offices, schools, and colleges within the Nuapada Assembly constituency.

A delegation representing the BJD, which included Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo and prominent leader Lenin Mohanty, visited the CEO's office to submit their petition.

The party voiced significant concern about what they describe as violations of the model code of conduct by the BJP in the Nuapada region.

In their petition, the BJD claimed that despite multiple complaints, the BJP's banners and posters continue to be displayed on government properties across Nuapada.

"Despite numerous complaints made to both the District Collector of Nuapada (District Electoral Officer) and your esteemed office, the BJP's posters and hoardings persist on public utilities like electricity poles and the walls of government offices, schools, and colleges, clearly violating electoral regulations," the BJD asserted.

The petition further expressed disappointment that officials responsible for maintaining neutrality, particularly Nuapada Collector Madhusudan Dash and District Superintendent of Police Amritpal Singh, are perceived as acting in a biased manner.

"Their bias has become more pronounced following the recent visit of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to Nuapada. During the current election campaign, the CM convened a meeting solely with government officials, which seems to have encouraged the district administration to favor the BJP. These officials now appear to be acting as advocates for the BJP, rather than enforcing election laws," the BJD alleged.

The BJD stressed that this situation severely undermines public confidence in the integrity of the ongoing electoral process.

"We respectfully urge the Odisha CEO to promptly direct the removal of all BJP banners, posters, and promotional materials from government properties, such as electricity poles and the walls of government offices, schools, and colleges in Nuapada district. We also call for the Nuapada District Collector and the District Superintendent of Police to strictly adhere to the model code of conduct and ensure impartiality throughout the election period," the BJD stated.

The party additionally urged the Odisha CEO to impose strict penalties on government officials found to be assisting or shielding BJP leaders.

Point of View

It is vital to recognize that maintaining electoral integrity is essential for public trust in democracy. The allegations made by the BJD against the BJP and local officials highlight a critical need for impartiality and adherence to electoral regulations. The transparency of the electoral process must be upheld to ensure fair representation for all citizens.
