Bhubaneswar, Oct 21 (NationPress) The primary opposition party, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), formally filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha on Tuesday against School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond and other parties, citing a breach of the Model Code of Conduct in the upcoming Nuapada bypolls.
The complaint also involves Jay Dholakia, the BJP candidate for the Nuapada bye-election, and the administration of an educational institution located in the Nuapada district.
During a media briefing post their meeting with the CEO, senior BJD figure Lenin Mohanty indicated that Minister Gond attended an event at an educational institution in Nuapada on October 20, where he purportedly made political promises and remarks linked to campaigning.
The BJD alleged that Gond actively supported Dholakia during this event.
“Despite the meeting being organized under the auspices of the Gond Samaj, its nature and intent were distinctly political, aimed at swaying voters in favor of the BJP candidate,” Mohanty stated.
He described this act as a blatant infringement of the Model Code of Conduct by the state minister.
“In accordance with the Election Commission’s regulations, no educational establishment should be utilized for political activities once the electoral process commences. The Minister's attendance at the event and subsequent promises constitute a clear breach of electoral rules,” Mohanty noted.
He mentioned that the BJD has requested a thorough investigation and stringent action against all participants, including the Minister, the BJP candidate, and the relevant institution.
“The complaint specifically calls out School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, BJP candidate Jay Dholakia, and the educational institution, which is allegedly government-supported,” Mohanty added.
According to BJD sources, the CEO has committed to conducting an investigation and taking suitable measures in line with electoral regulations.
