Bhubaneswar, Nov 4 (NationPress) A fierce exchange of words erupted on Tuesday between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the primary opposition, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), after the BJD President and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made a subtle critique of the ruling party and its candidate for the Nuapada bye-election, Jay Dholakia, during a public gathering in Komana.

In his campaign address, the BJD leader alleged that the residents of Nuapada are expressing discontent over what he termed as betrayal by the BJP towards the BJD and himself.

He further accused the BJP of vote theft and poaching the opposition's candidate, indirectly referencing Jay Dholakia's switch to the BJP.

In response to Patnaik's allegations, numerous BJP figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and candidate Jay Dholakia, retaliated against the BJD leader's claims of betrayal.

Jay and his mother, Kalpana Dholakia—the widow of the late BJD leader Rajendra Dholakia, whose passing on September 8 prompted the need for the bypoll in the Nuapada Assembly constituency—on Sunday accused the BJD of neglecting Rajendra Dholakia, despite his longstanding loyalty to the party.

Kalpana Dholakia alleged, “My husband dedicated nearly 24 years to the BJD. Even in his last days, when he was unwell, no one from the party checked on him or offered assistance. The neglect and silence from the party deeply wounded him.”

She criticized the BJD, asserting that it was neither dignified nor sensible to attack the son of a man who devoted such time to the party.

In contrast, BJD General Secretary Lekhashree Samantsinghar denounced the statements made by Jay Dholakia and his mother against the BJD President, calling them “unfortunate and false.” She stated it was unacceptable for someone who switched parties for personal interests to level groundless accusations against the BJD.

Point of View

The ongoing feud between the BJP and BJD highlights the intricate dynamics of regional politics in India. The clash underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in political parties, especially in the face of electoral challenges. As citizens remain vigilant, both parties must address the concerns raised by their constituents to maintain their credibility and support.
