Should the ECI Investigate the DMK's Rs 2,000 Crore Cash Hoard Ahead of Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made serious accusations against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), alleging that the party has accumulated nearly Rs 2,000 crore to sway voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP has called on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate action.
In a statement released on Thursday, BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad asserted that the ruling party is involved in extensive electoral misconduct and demanded a comprehensive investigation, including raids and confiscation of what he termed "illicit funds intended for voter manipulation".
The BJP has claimed that networks for cash distribution are being organized at the booth level across various constituencies, highlighting Thiruvidanthai near Mamallapuram as a specific area where party workers were reportedly trained to facilitate voter payments.
Prasad further alleged that substantial amounts of money are concealed in numerous constituencies, including Kolathur, which is represented by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
According to Prasad, these actions breach the Representation of the People Act and violate laws associated with bribery and corrupt electoral practices.
The party is advocating for forensic audits and legal proceedings against those implicated.
Prasad also called upon the Election Commission's oversight team, currently in Chennai for pre-poll assessments in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, to exercise its authority under Article 324 of the Constitution to guarantee free and fair elections.
He urged Tamil Nadu's Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik to inform the Commission about what the BJP describes as a "deteriorating electoral atmosphere", referencing previous instances of significant cash seizures during elections.
The BJP framed this situation as part of a larger political struggle between what it labels the NDA's "development-focused governance model" and the DMK's "corruption-laden administration".
The party expressed confidence that the AIADMK-BJP alliance will garner public support in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Political analysts point out that accusations of cash-for-votes have frequently emerged during elections in Tamil Nadu, leading to increased scrutiny from enforcement agencies and the Election Commission.
As the Assembly elections draw near, demands for stricter oversight and transparency are anticipated to escalate across the political landscape of the state.
