BJP Accuses DMK of Corruption in Election Deals, Demands Probe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 9 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made alarming accusations against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), asserting that the party has engaged in extensive financial bribery to secure electoral alliances and manipulate voter sentiment ahead of the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad announced on Monday that the party plans to lodge formal complaints with the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), urging immediate investigations into these purported financial dealings.
During a press briefing, Prasad alleged that the DMK's leadership is spending enormous amounts to solidify its electoral alliances, aiming to bolster its chances in the upcoming elections.
He claimed that substantial financial incentives are being offered to various alliance partners during negotiations. Specifically, he alleged that the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leadership received ₹150 crore as part of their discussions, with ₹300 crore purportedly given to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and ₹50 crore to Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai.
Prasad emphasized that these allegations necessitate immediate investigation by the relevant authorities. He also urged the ED to scrutinize the purported involvement of senior DMK officials in facilitating these transactions, particularly mentioning ministers K.N. Nehru and A.V. Velu, who he alleges played a crucial role in coordinating payments during the alliance talks.
Furthermore, he called for an examination of whether these transactions breached the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Representation of the People Act.
Prasad raised concerns regarding Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge, the son of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, suggesting that his frequent visits to Tamil Nadu during the alliance discussions warrant investigation to determine if they were linked to electoral funding.
He further alleged that essential household items such as groceries, sarees, dhotis, and pressure cookers were being distributed to constituents in various districts. Additionally, he claimed that local community leaders and influencers were being offered cash incentives ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh.
Moreover, the BJP spokesperson alleged that approximately ₹2,000 crore in cash has been hoarded across the state for distribution to voters during the election period.
Prasad urged the Election Commission to deploy special monitoring teams and flying squads across all districts to prevent the misuse of financial power during the elections.
