Why is the TN BJP Criticizing the DMDK-DMK Alliance?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu BJP has sharply criticized the DMDK for forming an electoral alliance with the DMK ahead of the Assembly elections, claiming that this decision undermines the legacy of party founder Vijayakanth.
In a powerful statement on its official X page, the BJP expressed, “Captain Vijayakanth dedicated his entire political life to combating the DMK, which he viewed as an evil force harming the people. The DMK subjected both the Captain and the party he founded to humiliation and suffering. Now, the movement he established has allied with the very DMK. The Captain’s soul will never forgive this betrayal.”
This criticism emerged following the formal announcement of the collaboration between the DMDK and the DMK. The announcement came after DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth met with Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters, 'Anna Arivalayam', in Chennai.
After the meeting, Premalatha informed reporters that this alliance was formed in accordance with the wishes of the party’s district secretaries, office-bearers, and cadre.
“Today, we have formalized an alliance with the DMK. This was something that should have happened in 2016. After ten years, it is finally realized,” she stated.
She also indicated that a committee would be set up to determine the number of seats the DMDK would contest, the constituencies it would aim for, and the candidates it would nominate.
Premalatha hinted that details regarding Rajya Sabha representation would be disclosed by Chief Minister Stalin.
Welcoming the DMDK into the Secular Progressive Alliance, CM Stalin expressed his delight over the development.
In a post on X, he stated that the spirit represented by the black-and-red flags and the rekindled friendship between the parties would significantly contribute to the progress of Tamil Nadu.
He voiced confidence that the alliance would work together to secure the DMK’s return to power and ensure comprehensive advancement for the state.
The DMDK had previously been part of the AIADMK-led coalition in the last parliamentary elections but had postponed announcing its position for the Assembly polls, sparking speculation before ultimately aligning with the DMK.
