Is There a Pattern in the Attacks on Bengali-Speaking Migrants Alleged by Abhishek Banerjee?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 13 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, raised concerns on Friday regarding a noticeable trend in assaults on Bengali-speaking individuals in various states, particularly those governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During his visit to Purulia district, he met with the family of Sukhen Mahato, a migrant worker from the region who was tragically killed in Pune, Maharashtra.
The Trinamool Congress has claimed that Mahato was specifically targeted due to his Bengali-speaking background, a claim that the Pune Police have refuted, asserting that the murder stemmed from a drunken altercation.
“The circumstances surrounding his death warrant thorough investigation. The Maharashtra Police must conduct a proper inquiry and hold those responsible accountable. There is, however, a discernible trend in the violence against Bengali-speaking individuals in other states, notably those under BJP rule. At this juncture, I am refraining from directly linking the Purulia incident to this trend,” Banerjee stated to the press following his visit with Mahato’s family.
He further alleged that in states controlled by the BJP, suspects often manage to secure bail with ease.
“Nevertheless, the Maharashtra Police should ensure that this does not occur in the case of Sukhen Mahato. The Trinamool Congress will actively pursue this matter to guarantee that justice is served,” he emphasized.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media, alleging that Mahato was subjected to torture and ultimately killed due to his language, identity, and heritage.
In response to her remarks, the Pune Police released a comprehensive statement explaining that the incident transpired on Monday night. Mahato was employed at a local business and had left for work around 3 p.m. However, police report that he did not arrive for his shift.
Instead, authorities claimed that Mahato was seen wandering in the Koregaon area of Pune while inebriated.
Inspector Deepratan Gaikwad of the Shikrapur police station in Pune noted that Mahato engaged in a dispute with two individuals while allegedly under the influence on the day of the incident.
