Kolkata, January 17 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress's all-India general secretary Abhishek Banerjee announced on Saturday that the administration has provided financial aid for the family of the deceased migrant worker killed in Jharkhand, which sparked a series of protests in Beldanga, located in Murshidabad district.
Banerjee claimed that certain BJP elements are inciting violence in response to the migrant worker's death. He further revealed that a decision has been made to offer a job to the victim's wife. He urged the community to uphold peace and respect the law.
In his remarks directed at the BJP, he stated, "I urge everyone to ensure peace and order in the region. We must not provide any support to the BJP in any manner." He added that the West Bengal government has reached out to the Jharkhand administration regarding this issue.
During his address to party members in Berhampur, he mentioned, "Upon learning of the Beldanga incident, I promptly contacted the office of the Jharkhand Chief Minister. I insisted that if anyone is accountable for this tragedy, they should be investigated and held accountable. They have promised that action will be taken swiftly. However, no one should take the law into their own hands, as this only benefits those BJP traitors. Stay alert against any provocations; this is essential."
The Trinamool Congress leader continued, "Yusuf, our MP from Baharampur, expressed his desire to visit Beldanga. I informed him that I have a rally scheduled today. After our meeting, all our MLAs and MPs will support Alauddin Sheikh's family. Following the Chief Minister's directives, the district administration has already pledged financial support of Rs 2 lakh and a job for his wife. This is what our compassionate government stands for."
The state has also introduced a helpline for migrant workers from Murshidabad. Banerjee encouraged anyone facing challenges to reach out via these numbers. "Our administration is here for you. We will offer legal support and help you return home," he stated.
On Saturday, Beldanga witnessed renewed unrest, just one day after a similar protest erupted in the area. Hundreds blocked the Barua More intersection in Beldanga, demanding justice for the alleged killing of a migrant worker from the district in Jharkhand.
Protesters obstructed National Highway 12, insisting on justice for the incident.
Numerous media personnel were attacked while covering the protests. The police subsequently resorted to a lathi-charge to restore order and disperse the crowds. Following the unrest, approximately 30 individuals were detained for their involvement in the violence.
