Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her outrage over the tragic death of a West Bengal migrant worker in Pune, Maharashtra, and criticized the alarming trend of xenophobia being weaponized against innocent individuals. In a post on her X account, CM Banerjee shared a video of the incident, voicing her concerns regarding the increasing hate crimes in India.
"I am deeply disturbed, furious, and horrified by the brutal murder of Sukhen Mahato, a 24-year-old migrant worker from Bandwan in Purulia, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, in Pune, Maharashtra," Banerjee wrote.
"This is nothing less than a hate crime. A young man was hunted down, tortured, and killed for his language, identity, and heritage. This reflects the direct outcomes of a climate where xenophobia is weaponized, turning innocent people into targets," she stated.
Banerjee insisted on the immediate apprehension of those responsible and demanded stringent punishment for this heinous act.
"I urge for swift arrests and severe penalties for the offenders. To Sukhen’s family, I extend my condolences and assure that Bengal stands with you in this time of profound sorrow. We will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of justice," Banerjee asserted.
This incident marks another instance where Mamata Banerjee has voiced her concerns regarding the treatment of migrant workers from West Bengal across the nation, particularly in states governed by BJP. She has consistently criticized the central government for the mistreatment of Bengali-speaking individuals.
The strong response from the Chief Minister followed the alleged murder of another migrant worker from Purulia district in Maharashtra. The leadership of the Trinamool Congress claimed that the worker was targeted for speaking Bengali.
According to law enforcement and local reports, the victim was identified as Sukhen Mahato, originally from Bandwan, Purulia. His body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Koregaon Bhima area, under the jurisdiction of Pune's Shikarpur police station. Authorities suspect he was beaten to death for speaking Bengali. His elder brother, Tulsiram Mahato, lodged a murder complaint at the Shikarpur police station.
Sukhen had been working as a migrant laborer in Pune since 2021, employed at a car parts manufacturing firm in the Sanatbari region near Koregaon Bhima, where his body was recovered.
