Kolkata, Oct 6 (NationPress) BJP leader Rahul Sinha has vehemently criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she was responsible for a premeditated assault on BJP Maldaha Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh during their visit to Jalpaiguri district. The two leaders were reportedly attacked by a mob while attempting to assist those affected by landslides in North Bengal and distribute essential relief supplies.
While MLA Shankar Ghosh escaped with minor injuries, Khagen Murmu, a two-time MP, suffered severe wounds to his face and head.
Expressing outrage over the incident, Sinha stated to IANS, "While lives were lost in North Bengal, Mamata Banerjee chose to celebrate at a carnival in Kolkata. This is unprecedented. She visited the area after our BJP leaders had already been there, leading to their attack as per instructions from Kalighat."
"Our leaders faced a brutal assault, bleeding profusely, with their vehicles vandalized. Without proper security, the outcome could have been dire. This premeditated attack has not even been investigated by the police. We demand a CBI inquiry due to police inaction and insist on stringent action against those responsible," he added.
The incident unfolded in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district, where the BJP MP was found in a pool of blood, with a critical injury on the left side of his face, necessitating immediate medical attention at a nearby primary health center.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants threw stones, bricks, and assaulted the convoy with sticks and sandals until security personnel secured the BJP leaders' escape.
In a recorded message from the scene, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh remarked, "We were ruthlessly attacked. Our vehicle is in ruins. Stones and bricks were hurled at us, and our MP is severely injured. There is total chaos in West Bengal."
This violent event coincided with ongoing rescue efforts in North Bengal due to persistent rains and significant landslides that have resulted in at least 23 fatalities as of Monday morning. As conditions improve, rescue operations have escalated, with stranded tourists being safely brought down from the hills.
