Did BJP and JD(U) Expose Gandhi's Alleged Disrespect?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 31 (NationPress) Following comments from the Union Home Minister criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for refusing to don the 'gamosa' gifted to him by President Droupadi Murmu, leaders from both the BJP and JD(U) expressed their support for Shah on Saturday, asserting that this incident highlighted Gandhi’s supposed disdain and animosity towards the people of the Northeast, particularly Assam. In response, the Congress party countered by pointing out that even Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did not wear the gamosa.
The situation ignited when Amit Shah, during a speech in Dibrugarh, Assam, remarked that Rahul Gandhi’s choice not to wear the traditional gamosa was a sign of disrespect towards the cultures of the northeastern states.
“Rahul Gandhi is free to make his own choices, but as long as the BJP governs, we will ensure that the cultures of the northeastern states are respected,” stated Union Minister Shah.
He also emphasized that all other participants, including international guests, honored the tradition by wearing the customary attire, making Rahul Gandhi the sole exception.
In response to Shah's comments, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma expressed regret over the incident.
“The Assamese gamosa is recognized nationwide and symbolizes Assam. Wearing it signifies respect for the state and its populace. A refusal to accept it offends not only the people of Assam but the entire nation. Such actions indicate a disregard that should not be tolerated,” he remarked.
Sharma also recalled previous occasions where he felt that both Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge were absent from significant national events in Parliament, questioning their dedication to national and regional values.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo described the Republic Day incident as 'shameful' and troubling.
“Despite a request from the President, Rahul Gandhi chose not to wear the gamosa, while others did. This raises serious concerns about his attitude towards the Northeast and Assamese people,” he stated.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad emphasized that symbolic actions are vital for fostering connections between states and the central government.
“The Prime Minister frequently embraces local customs and clothing to engage with people during his visits. Rahul Gandhi has consistently struggled with issues of regional identity and self-respect. The Union Home Minister's remarks indicate that he has not learned from past experiences,” Prasad noted.
Meanwhile, the Congress party dismissed the criticisms.
Congress state president Deepak Baij pointed out that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also did not don a gamosa for the event.
“Amit Shah should first scrutinize the conduct of leaders within his own party before pointing fingers at others. Such remarks are merely for political advantage and reflect the BJP’s limited perspective,” he stated.
