Why Did Rahul Gandhi Refuse to Wear the 'Patka' After President's Request?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) The BJP has taken a strong stance against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, for allegedly declining to wear the traditional North-Eastern ‘patka’ despite a request made by President Droupadi Murmu. The party claims this incident has unveiled his ‘hateful thinking’.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo expressed concerns, stating that Gandhi's actions depict a lack of respect towards the Northeast. He noted, “Rahul Gandhi’s thinking has been exposed. Even foreign diplomats were willing to don the Assamese patta, a magnificent and culturally rich symbol of the Northeast. By opting not to wear it, he is, in essence, showing disrespect towards both the region and the nation. Has he cultivated such an attitude towards the people from this area? Why avoid wearing a cultural emblem? This showcases a mindset steeped in hatred, as he continues to propagate animosity,”
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Congress leadership of being arrogant. “The issue today is that Congress and Rahul Gandhi are ensnared in feudal arrogance,” he remarked, adding that such stubbornness was leading the party towards self-destruction.
Sudhir Mungantiwar, another BJP leader, supported this view, emphasizing that there was no valid reason for rejecting the President's request. “If the President suggested wearing the patka, there was no justification for refusal. We must embrace our colors, clothing, and traditional attire as they symbolize our culture,” he stated.
In response, Congress leader Hussain Dalwai dismissed the uproar, suggesting that the issue was being unduly politicized. “It’s inaccurate to say Rahul Gandhi did not wish to wear it. Several BJP leaders also opted out of wearing the patka, so what’s the political dilemma? Where’s the disrespect? Even Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did not wear it. Yet, only Rahul Gandhi is being singled out,” he commented during an interview with IANS.
Senior advocate and former MP Majeed Memon noted that this incident was being manipulated for political gain. “This serves to highlight grievances against the government. It is merely a political tactic,” he stated.
The ‘patka’, a traditional headdress from various North-Eastern states, symbolizes respect and pride, encapsulating the region’s rich cultural heritage and traditions.
