Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently launched a strong rebuttal against Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra regarding her comments on the unsuccessful passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. The BJP stated that women nationwide would "educate the Opposition" for their role in hindering this crucial legislation.
This response follows Priyanka Gandhi's remarks a day earlier, where she accused the Opposition of uniting to disrupt what she termed a "conspiracy" by the government aimed at undermining the federal system and eroding democracy.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, was rejected in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
During a press briefing at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi, Priyanka Gandhi proclaimed, "What transpired yesterday was a significant triumph for democracy. The government's plot to disrupt the federal framework and diminish democratic values has been thwarted. This was a win for the Constitution, the nation, and the solidarity of the Opposition, evident from the expressions of the ruling party leaders."
In response to Priyanka Gandhi's statements, BJP National Spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo remarked, "As a woman, Priyanka Gandhi was part of the coalition that defeated the Bill, which aimed to secure rights for women. Now, she claims they acted to guarantee women’s rights? She should feel ashamed. As a woman MP and daughter of Sonia Gandhi, who has also led the Congress, her party's role in obstructing the Women's Reservation Bill is disgraceful."
He further asserted that the citizens of India "will not pardon Congress," and their "sorrow will sweep the party away from the nation."
BJP National Executive member Boddu Nagalakshmi also condemned Priyanka Gandhi, stating, "Sonia Gandhi's beloved daughter speaks about reservation after dismissing the very Bill intended for women's representation. The BJP champions women's rights in this country. The BJP is akin to a lotus rising from muddy waters. No matter how much you criticize the BJP, it remains unfazed. With elections underway, your views on reservation will be dismissed by the women of this nation."
Additionally, Janata Dal-United National Spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan joined the chorus of criticism against Priyanka Gandhi, urging her to amend her statements and acknowledge that the Opposition succeeded in executing Congress's plot against women. He warned that this move would prove exceedingly costly, asserting that voters are prepared to teach these parties a lesson, including Congress, DMK, Trinamool, and Samajwadi Party. The women have resolved to reject them universally.
The Bill, which sought to allocate 33 percent of seats for women in Parliament, failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority, igniting a fierce political clash between the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA alliance.
Despite a lengthy debate, the proposed legislation, which also aimed to enlarge the House's composition, could not secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. The Bill received 298 votes in favor and 230 votes against it, falling short of the necessary threshold for approval.
