Can CM Mamata Prove Her Allegations of Coal Smuggling Against Suvendu Adhikari?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 10 (NationPress) Two prominent BJP figures in West Bengal, namely the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, and the state vice-president of BJP, Jagannath Chattopadhyay, have issued a challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They demand that she substantiates her claims regarding their alleged involvement in a coal smuggling scandal within a stipulated period or face defamation charges.
Adhikari's legal counsel has already dispatched a defamation notice to the Chief Minister, requiring her to present any claimed evidence related to the allegations within 72 hours or be prepared for both civil and criminal defamation actions.
Meanwhile, Chattopadhyay has taken to social media, posting a video urging the Chief Minister to either validate her accusations promptly or confront legal repercussions.
Chattopadhyay, previously the state general secretary of the BJP in West Bengal, was recently promoted to state vice-president in the newly formed party committee.
Their statements come in response to the Chief Minister's recent public remarks suggesting that “the proceeds of the coal smuggling operations in West Bengal reached Union Home Minister Amit Shah through Chattopadhyay or Adhikari.”
Chattopadhyay noted that during the peak of coal smuggling between 2016 and 2020, he was a journalist, and after leaving journalism, he joined the BJP before the 2021 state assembly elections.
“During my time as a journalist from 2016 to 2020, I investigated the alleged coal smuggling scams in West Bengal and have retained all supporting documents for my reports. As a BJP member, I have refrained from disclosing these documents, but if my reputation is at stake, I will consider making them public. How will that reflect on the Chief Minister and her party?” Chattopadhyay questioned in his video.
“I challenge the Chief Minister to provide all claimed evidence within 72 hours or face the legal repercussions,” he asserted.
