Imphal, Nov 12 (NationPress) Two prominent central BJP officials landed in Imphal on Wednesday, engaging in multiple discussions with state party leaders and MLAs, which has heightened speculation regarding the potential establishment of a new government in Manipur. The region has been under President’s Rule since February 13 due to extended ethnic strife.
BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh and the party’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra arrived in Imphal, where they conducted several meetings with state leaders, office bearers, and legislators at the party’s state headquarters.
A party official disclosed that in the presence of Santhosh and Patra, the state BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi led a comprehensive meeting with state office bearers, spokespersons, Morcha presidents, district presidents, and mandal presidents.
The meeting concentrated on strengthening the organization, coordinating leadership, and improving grassroots outreach,” the official mentioned.
The source, who requested anonymity, added that during their three-day visit, Santhosh and Patra are anticipated to meet community representatives and leaders from various factions to grasp the grassroots dynamics.
Santhosh and Patra are also expected to engage in individual discussions with MLAs and prepare a detailed report on the political and ground conditions for the party’s national leadership.
Closed-door sessions with MLAs who previously supported the BJP administration under former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh are also likely to be convened to deliberate on leadership alternatives, political realignments, and the feasibility of establishing an interim government ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
A separate roundtable discussion with distinguished personalities was also conducted at a hotel in Imphal.
The dialogue between the visiting BJP central leaders and prominent figures emphasized crucial insights into socio-political developments and the collective role in fostering Manipur’s growth and harmony,” the BJP official stated.
Last month, 26 BJP MLAs, including Biren Singh, had met Santhosh and Patra in New Delhi, urging the party leadership to “install a popular government” in Manipur, indicating their preparedness to resume governance as a united front.
Former Chief Minister Biren Singh, who resigned on February 9—just four days prior to the imposition of President’s Rule—recently asserted that all BJP legislators in Manipur remain united in their efforts to establish a popular government in the state.
He emphasized that the process of government formation is already in progress, while refraining from commenting on individual opinions expressed by legislators.
Expressing concern over the circumstances of violence-affected Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in relief camps, Singh underscored the urgent need to address their issues and enhance their living conditions.
“There is a demand from the public and from our side that we want to resolve the issues of the displaced people and others. Their problems can only be solved if a popular government is formed,” Singh recently stated.
He asserted that re-establishing a stable and representative government is critical to addressing the ongoing humanitarian crises in the state.
“Once a popularly elected government is in place, the challenges faced by displaced families and other state issues will become the government’s top priority,” he added.
