BJP lost deposits on 1,000+ seats in Punjab civic polls: CM Bhagwant Mann
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday, 29 May declared that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s landslide performance in the state's municipal elections amounted to a decisive public endorsement of his government's governance record, pointedly noting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to save its deposits on more than 1,000 seats.
Scale of AAP's Victory
Mann said the results were comprehensive across urban Punjab. In Dhuri, AAP won 19 of 21 seats. In Gidderbaha — described as the home turf of the Punjab Congress president — the party secured 17 of 19 seats. In Barnala, associated with the newly appointed Punjab BJP chief, AAP won 37 of 50 seats while the BJP, according to Mann, 'was nowhere in the picture.'
Mann also cited the party's broader electoral record, stating that AAP had won more than 11,000 panchayat seats out of nearly 13,000 contested, and had prevailed in by-elections to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, four Vidhan Sabha constituencies, Zila Parishads, and Block Samitis.
BJP's Collapse in Urban Strongholds
The Chief Minister was particularly pointed about the BJP's performance, saying the party had slipped to fifth position in the civic polls despite what he described as considerable pre-election hype. 'In many places, even Independents have won more seats than the BJP. It appeared as though the BJP was competing only with NOTA,' he remarked.
Mann referred to the BJP as the 'ED Party' — a recurring jibe linking the party to the Enforcement Directorate's actions against AAP leaders — and said the results sent a message that voters had rejected attempts to 'misuse the ED and central agencies to harass AAP leaders and workers.'
Opposition Routed Across the Board
Mann said the combined tally of the Indian National Congress (Congress), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the BJP together fell short of AAP's seat count. 'The people have completely rejected their negative and divisive agenda. Even in urban areas, which the BJP considers its traditional vote base, voters have decisively rejected them,' he said.
He added that former AAP Rajya Sabha members who left the party had also been repudiated by voters, saying those who 'chose to backstab the party had received an answer from the people.'
What the Mandate Signals for 2027
Mann framed the civic election outcome as a trailer for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, asserting that AAP was on course to surpass its historic performance in the 2022 Assembly polls. He attributed the party's sustained support to welfare initiatives including free electricity, quality public education, free healthcare, and employment generation, and pledged equal development across every city, town, and village in the state.
With the 2027 elections less than two years away, the civic results are likely to sharpen both AAP's confidence and the opposition's urgency to rebuild ground-level presence in urban Punjab.
