Mumbai, Dec 21 (NationPress) The BJP-led Mahayuti has achieved a significant milestone in the Maharashtra local body elections, surpassing the 200-seat mark, based on trends reported as of 2:30 p.m.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has displayed a robust performance in the elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats throughout the state.
According to the latest updates, the BJP is in the lead for 3,120 seats out of the 6,859 contested.
Its coalition partners, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), are currently ahead in approximately 600 and 200 seats, respectively.
Among the opposition factions, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 145 seats, Congress in 105 seats, and NCP (SP) in 122 seats.
Regarding overall control of local bodies, the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition is ahead in 214 local bodies, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi is leading in only 52.
These elections, occurring after nearly a decade, are being closely monitored as a crucial indicator of the political landscape in Maharashtra's semi-urban and rural areas.
This trend comes a year following the Mahayuti's resounding success in the 2024 Assembly elections.
Amid concerns over an ongoing agrarian crisis in various parts of the state, the partial implementation of benefits under the government’s flagship welfare program for women, and farmers expressing dissatisfaction over insufficient financial aid, the opposition was anticipated to pose a strong challenge.
However, the campaign period highlighted a notable absence of intent and coordination among the opposition parties.
While Congress leaders campaigned vigorously in Vidarbha and Marathwada, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders were largely absent from the campaign trail, and NCP (SP) leaders remained focused on their local constituencies.
In contrast, the ruling Mahayuti conducted a vigorous campaign, with the Chief Minister and both Deputy Chief Ministers spearheading efforts for their respective parties and reaching even the most remote areas.
The lead-up to the elections was also characterized by internal tensions within the Mahayuti, as alliance partners contested against each other in multiple regions.
A number of Shiv Sena ministers skipped a cabinet meeting, openly criticizing the BJP for employing “bullying” tactics. In a speech, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde subtly reminded the BJP of the necessity of “alliance dharma”.
The results of the local body elections are politically significant, especially with the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections set to take place next month.
