BJP Critiques TVK's Manifesto for Financial Irresponsibility and Feasibility Issues
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 16 (NationPress) BJP leader A.N.S. Prasad sharply criticized the election manifesto released by actor-turned-politician Vijay, accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of making “unrealistic and financially reckless” promises without a feasible implementation plan.
In his statement, Prasad asserted that the welfare initiatives outlined in the manifesto would demand a staggering Rs 6 lakh crore, raising significant concerns about their practicality as Tamil Nadu's debt is anticipated to exceed Rs 10.71 lakh crore by 2026–27.
He warned that such extensive commitments, if executed without clear funding mechanisms, could severely burden the state's financial health and hinder future developmental spending.
The BJP leader lambasted the manifesto for what he termed “populist handouts”, which include monthly payments for women and youth, gold for brides, loan forgiveness, unemployment aid, and subsidized services.
While acknowledging that welfare policies are crucial for governance, he emphasized the necessity for these measures to be in line with fiscal responsibility and sustainable revenue frameworks to prevent long-lasting economic pressure.
Prasad also compared the current scenario with the 2021 Assembly elections, where he criticized Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and the ruling DMK.
He claimed that many commitments made during the previous campaign were left unfulfilled due to financial limitations, cautioning that a similar situation could arise if large-scale promises continue without adequate planning and fiscal discipline.
According to him, the TVK manifesto fails to present a coherent vision for essential areas such as agriculture, rural development, industrial expansion, and job creation.
Instead, he noted, it seems to depend heavily on welfare-oriented appeals that target specific voter demographics, particularly women and youth, without defining measurable results.
The BJP is positioning the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a credible alternative, stating that a “double-engine government” led by AIADMK head Edappadi K. Palaniswami, with support from PM Modi, would focus on fiscal responsibility, infrastructure enhancement, and inclusive growth.
These comments come as campaign efforts intensify ahead of the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with political factions increasingly emphasizing manifesto commitments to influence voter perceptions.
As of now, TVK has not responded to the BJP's allegations.
