Is Vijay's Political Strategy Benefiting DMK?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 14 (NationPress) A.N.S. Prasad, the spokesperson for the Tamil Nadu branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party, launched a fierce criticism against actor-politician Vijay on Saturday, claiming that his political maneuvers were inadvertently supporting the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
In his statement, Prasad asserted that Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was striving to fragment anti-DMK votes as the Assembly elections approach.
Mentioning Vijay's recent comments during a party gathering in Salem, where he questioned the feasibility of launching a party independently like M.G. Ramachandran or C.N. Annadurai did in the past, Prasad deemed the remarks politically naive.
The BJP representative reiterated statements made by State BJP president Nainar Nagendran, who had suggested that Vijay should become more engaged with public concerns instead of relying on what the party deemed “cinematic rhetoric.”
Prasad noted that Nagendran’s advice was intended as “well-meaning guidance,” but claimed it was misrepresented by DMK supporters and certain media outlets.
Additionally, Prasad probed into Vijay’s response to a prior incident in which 41 of his supporters tragically lost their lives, questioning why there had been no ongoing protests or persistent demands for justice.
He alleged that although Vijay initially criticized the DMK government and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he had since moderated his stance. The BJP further contended that the establishment of TVK during a period of rising anti-incumbency against the DMK seemed strategically timed to hinder the consolidation of opposition votes behind the AIADMK-BJP alliance.
The BJP accused Vijay of operating in a way that might ultimately assist the ruling party.
By drawing parallels with figures like MGR and J. Jayalalithaa, Prasad emphasized that they attained power through dedicated grassroots involvement and public service. He expressed confidence that Tamil Nadu voters would scrutinize the political motives of all parties as the elections draw nearer.
As the Assembly elections loom, this exchange of words indicates a growing political rivalry for opposition influence within the state.
