BJP Requests Removal of Police Officials in Bengal for Bias
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 4 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) submitted a formal request to West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Kumar Agarwal, on Saturday, calling for the dismissal of police officers Shantanu Sinha Biswas (Kolkata Deputy Commissioner of Police), Bijitaswa Routh (Inspector-in-Charge), and Rahul Amin Ali Shah (Sub-Inspector) due to their purportedly biased actions.
The letter highlighted that these officers allegedly campaigned for the success of their 'guardian,' Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during the West Bengal Police Welfare Committee's State Conference.
Additionally, the BJP provided a video as evidence to the State CEO's office.
The party pointed out that a complaint against Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas was lodged with the Election Commission of India on March 9, yet no action has been taken.
"It's crucial to note that during the 2021 Vidhan Sabha Elections, Shantanu Sinha Biswas was reassigned to Cooch Behar after elections concluded in that region, ensuring he was absent from areas where voting was still ongoing. The integrity of the electoral process heavily depends on the impartiality and fair conduct of officials, especially those responsible for law enforcement," the BJP emphasized in their letter.
Consequently, the BJP urged the CEO's office to take prompt action to ensure these officers are reassigned away from West Bengal until the electoral process is completed.
This development follows the Trinamool Congress' request for the immediate removal of the Returning Officer for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, citing his close ties with BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari.
In a representation made to CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal on Friday, the TMC expressed their concerns regarding the appointment of Surajit Roy as Returning Officer for the Bhabanipur seat in southern Kolkata.
