The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suspended local leader Sudeep Ram for allegedly locking the main gate of the Entally police station in Kolkata during the night of Independence Day, a party leader confirmed on Saturday, 29 August. The suspension order was issued by BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya through the party's disciplinary committee.

The Suspension and Show-Cause Notice

Sudeep Ram was served a show-cause notice on Friday and asked to furnish a satisfactory explanation within seven days for his role in the police station protest. According to party sources, he will remain suspended until the top leadership issues further instructions. The disciplinary action follows a stated commitment by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari that there would be no compromise on law and order after the change of government in West Bengal, with strict action promised against anyone who attacked the police force.

What Triggered the Protest

The incident traces back to a factional dispute within the BJP's Entally Assembly constituency. On one side stands the group led by Priyanka Tibrewal; on the other, brothers Dilip Ram and Sudeep Ram. According to sources, the Dilip-Sudeep faction had been planning to organise a Durga Puja in ward number 54 of Padmapukur, with a khuti puja already conducted. Priyanka Tibrewal's group allegedly moved to stop the event, though her camp claimed residents had clashed with the Dilip-Sudeep group over the puja arrangements.

Independence Day Clashes and the Police Station Incident

The underlying tension boiled over during Independence Day celebrations. It was alleged that a group went on a rampage at a function organised by the Dilip-Sudeep camp, with several people reportedly beaten up. Members of the affected group then surrounded the Entally police station and allegedly locked its main gate in protest. Senior police officers reached the station late that night and intervened to restore order. The Dilip-Sudeep faction has denied locking the gate, alleging instead that police personnel had done so themselves. Despite the denial, an FIR was reportedly registered against both Dilip and Sudeep Ram at Entally police station, according to police sources.

Trinamool Congress Connection

The dispute has drawn in an unlikely figure: rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sandipan Saha, who was reportedly implicated in the conflict. According to sources, close associates of Saha were allegedly fuelling the rift by instigating one of the two BJP factions. None of the leaders from either group were willing to comment publicly on the allegation. This comes amid a broader pattern of intra-party friction within the BJP's Kolkata units, where local organisational rivalries have periodically surfaced.

What Happens Next

Sudeep Ram's suspension remains in force until the party's central leadership decides otherwise. The show-cause response deadline gives the disciplinary committee a basis to either reinstate or further penalise him. With an FIR already on record and a TMC MLA allegedly in the background, the Entally episode is likely to remain a flashpoint for both the party and local law enforcement.
