BJP Directs Lok Sabha MPs to Attend Key Sessions Amid Speaker Motion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a directive to its Lok Sabha MPs, emphasizing the necessity for their attendance in the House during the upcoming week when the second phase of the Budget Session unfolds. This three-line whip, released on Friday, highlights that "extremely significant legislative matters" will be addressed on March 9 and 10, necessitating their presence.
The BJP's directive is particularly relevant as discussions are anticipated regarding a motion aimed at the removal of Speaker Om Birla, accused of showing favoritism towards the opposition.
In the communication, dated March 6 and signed by Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, the chief whip for the BJP in Lok Sabha, it states, “All BJP Members are informed that some very important Legislative Business will be taken up for passing in the Lok Sabha on Monday, the 9th March 2026 and Tuesday, the 10th March 2026.”
Furthermore, the message urges all members to be present and to back the Government's position during these crucial sessions.
Reports indicate that the resolution from the opposition regarding Speaker Om Birla may be discussed as soon as March 9, following escalating tensions in Parliament related to former Army chief General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoirs.
While Speaker Om Birla is expected to be in attendance, he has indicated a willingness to recuse himself from chairing the proceedings due to the opposition's resolution against him.
In accordance with established rules, Speaker Om Birla retains the right to vote on the resolution when it is presented in the House.
Over 100 opposition members had previously submitted notice for the resolution against the Speaker in the initial segment of the Budget Session.
The Congress party and other opposition groups have expressed outrage over the Speaker’s perceived bias, particularly towards Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he was deprived of his right to respond to the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, as well as his right to address alarming reports concerning advancing Chinese troops during the Galwan clash. This led to the suspension of eight opposition members during protests.
Additionally, the Congress party is believed to have issued a similar directive to its Lok Sabha MPs, requiring their presence in the House from March 9 to 11.
As the Budget Session resumes after a break, the House is poised for heightened tensions as opposition members intensify their efforts to unseat Om Birla, who is currently serving his second term as Lok Sabha Speaker.
